A native of the city of Lugansk, part of the former Soviet Republic of Ukraine. Competed at the Deaf World Games in 1965 (3 gold and 1 silver), 1969 (4 gold), 1973 (2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze) and 1977 (1 silver). As of 1 January 2009, he is still the world record holder in 400m hurdles (49.1) - this record was at 1968 Olympic Games held in Mexico City. 1969 European champion in the 400m hurdles (49.70) among the non-deaf. The first and only sportsman from the Soviet Union to be enshrined into the American Athletic Association of the Deaf/USA Hall of Fame in 1965.
