Russia 1 Finland 9
By David Kurs
Finland (2-0) capitalized on a strong second period to decisively defeat the Russians (0-2). By scoring four goals in the middle stretch, Finland was able to capitalize on its lead and win the game 9-1. Finland was led by its strong defensive play, namely of Pauli Kitula and Ari Torvinen. In addition, Mikko Kotilla continued his strong goal-playing skills to shut out the many attempts Russia made to score a goal.
The Russians were marred by a lack of teamwork throughout the game. The halfbacks were unable to pass the puck to the forwards throughout the game. However, Goalie Serguei Tidianine proved capable as he blocked many of the scoring attempts Finland made. Denis Kholine proved his defensive prowess as he played all over the rink for 54 of the 60 minutes of the game. Oleg Kokouev scored Russia's lone goal.
The game between the neighbors of the Baltic Sea proved to be exciting and full of tension. Next, Russia faces the strong USA and Finland faces its greatest opponent yet in Canada.
Leading Scorers: Jan-Erik Granvik (FIN), 2 Ari Torvinen (FIN), 2
