ICSD President took part in Sport and Active Society Commission in Lausanne on November 7, 2016

Dr. Valery Rukhledev was warmly welcomed by the Chairman of Sport and Active Society Commission, Sam Ramsamy, as its newly elected member.

The IOC Commission is formerly known under the name “Sport for All” and part of the IOC Agenda 2020. Dr. Rukhledev was one of the experts that participated in drafting the terms of the Agenda.

Dr. Rukhledev said, “I am extremely honored and humbled to be able to represent the ICSD on the IOC Sport and Active Society Commission and to contribute to the excellent work being already done. Since finishing my sport career, I have made it my life purpose to promote the rights of persons with disabilities and to collaborate with all the members of the Olympic Family to use our experience as role models to encourage participation to promote sport and I will continue to do so through the membership on the Sport and Active Society Commission”.

The Commission main mission is to promote an active life style in society, with a particular focus on youth, using major events as an opportunity to promote activity, and to promote sport as a right for all regardless of nationality, religion, gender, socio-economic background or disability and sports ability to transcend all issues.

ICSD will cooperate with IOC Commission in such initiative as fighting obesity among the youth by encouraging an active lifestyle. It will be made possible through Development Grants, events such as Olympic Day activities, as well as longer-term projects available through Olympic Solidarity/Sport for All Programs that benefit local communities.

ICSD encourages NDFs to check the Olympic programs that are being developed by the Sport and Active Society Commission for the promoting of the active society at the “Get Moving! IOC Sport for All Toolkit”. Dr. Rukhledev said that with the increasing growth of urbanization and obesity rates, especially among the youth, the significance of physical activity could not be underestimated.

President Bach paid special attention to the importance of the anti-doping problem. He stated that protecting clean athletes is an absolute priority for the entire Olympic Movement and invited everyone in the Olympic Movement to contribute to its recommendations in this respect.

ICSD President extended his congratulations to Mr. Sam Ramsamy for the successful work of this important Commission. He also thanked Mr. Ramsamy for his great contribution in the promotion of sport for disabled persons. He added that ICSD looks forward to continuing its close relationship with the IOC.

At the end Dr. Rukhledev visited the IOC Women and Sport Awards Gala 2016 where Ethiopian sports journalist Dagim Zinabu Tekle becomes first male to receive world trophy by President Bach.

Among the winners, Dr. Carol Oglesby, President of Women Sport International and one of co-chairs of the International Working Group on Women and Sport (IWG). Dr. Carole Oglesby witnessed the event where ICSD endorsed the Brighton Declaration on Women and Sport which includes Deaf on June 12, 2014 at the 6th IWG World Conference on Women and Sport in Helsinki.
